Fall in Duluth brings crisp Lake Superior air, colorful scenery, and plenty of ways to celebrate Halloween. Visitors can choose from intense haunted attractions, historic evening tours, and kid-friendly events that make October a fun time for a North Shore getaway.

Planning your trip around seasonal Duluth events also gives you a chance to explore the city during one of its most atmospheric times of year. Here are some of the top Halloween activities to add to your itinerary.

William A. Irvin Haunted Ship

For a classic Duluth scare, head to the William A. Irvin along the waterfront. Each October, the historic Great Lakes freighter becomes the Duluth Haunted Ship, filling its narrow corridors and dark spaces with actors, special effects, and frightening scenes.

The Haunted Ship celebrates its 31st season in 2026, with tours beginning October 2 and continuing on select dates through Halloween. Saturday afternoon “Lights On” hours are also scheduled on select dates for visitors who want to see the attraction in a less frightening setting.

The ship includes stairs and tight spaces and is not wheelchair accessible, so check event details before purchasing tickets.

Glensheen Mansion

Glensheen offers a different type of October experience. Instead of a traditional haunted house, visitors can explore the historic 39-room mansion and its grounds along Lake Superior.

For extra Halloween atmosphere, book one of Glensheen’s Lantern Tours. Offered on Fridays and Saturdays in October, these guided experiences take visitors through the mansion by lantern light while sharing stories about its history.

Glensheen also hosts seasonal programming, making it an easy addition to a fall trip when you’re staying in our Duluth lodging for a few days.

Boo at the Zoo

Families with younger children can celebrate at Boo at the Zoo at the Lake Superior Zoo. This annual event provides Halloween fun without the intense scares found at Duluth’s haunted attractions.

For 2026, Boo at the Zoo is scheduled for October 10, 17, and 24. Families can expect trick-or-treating stations and other seasonal activities throughout the zoo. Costumes are encouraged, making this a good opportunity for kids to dress up before Halloween night.

Because much of the experience takes place outdoors, dress in layers and prepare for changing October weather.

Haunted Shack

Longtime Duluth visitors may remember the Haunted Shack at Buffalo House, but there is an important update for anyone planning a current trip: the attraction is no longer located at Buffalo House. The Haunted Shack moved to Carlton, Minnesota, in 2018.

The attraction has grown from its early days in Gary-New Duluth into a larger Halloween experience featuring a haunted house and outdoor scares. The current site is on a working farm, so guests should expect uneven ground, possible mud, and cold weather. The nighttime attraction is not recommended for children under 12.

If you are staying in one of our Duluth vacation rentals, the Haunted Shack can make a fun side trip for travelers looking for a more intense scare. Check the official Haunted Shack website for current-season dates before making the drive.
